Description: The business case for adoption highlighted efficiencies to be gained in the office, costs that can be reduced, and improved outcomes. Description: CMS is leading the charge in promoting a nationwide adoption of e-prescribing, setting standards specific to Medicare physicians and pharmacists. This session will examine both present and future e-prescribing standards, including those standards for Medicare Part D, how they affect practitioners that participate in Medicare, and how one ensures that they qualify for incentives. Panelists will also discuss e-prescribing systems certification and elaborate on what it means to be certified.

Description: If you feel overwhelmed at the thought of adopting e-prescribing in your environment, then this session is for you! The session allowed attendees to gain a better understanding of the implications of e-prescribing to their environments. Panelists covered a series of topics related to the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) E-prescribing requirements, including practical steps to take in order to adopt the new technology, the roles of pharmacists and providers in the process, and the incentives available for those that take part in the program.

The panelists discussed industry standards, including e-prescribing standards that directly affect existing technology. After presenting the business case for adopting e-prescribing systems, panelists shared best practices for workflow management.

Description: State Medicaid leaders presented on the federal landscape, including policy reforms in effect, and discussed the government's position as it relates to the Medicaid program. Panelists spoke to the costs and benefits associated with implementing e-prescribing programs within the Medicare program and identified options and related incentives for e-prescribing under the Medicaid program.

Description: There are ways to optimize e-prescribing adoption based upon your environment. Whether you work at a commercial institution or a private practice, electronic prescription technology can change and improve your service. The three panelists discussed pre-implementation (including the selection of e-prescribing software and achieving buy-in from the group and/or administrative staff), the implementation process, and post-implementation challenges for a variety of settings. Issues covered included new research, decision support, the benefits of e-prescribing and the lessons learned regarding handoffs and other post-implementation issues.

Description: This session examined the components of privacy, security and systems management as it relates to the e-prescribing program. The goal was to educate providers and pharmacists on consumer security and privacy, and delve into relevant topics that are integral to adequate e-prescribing preparation, such as litigation and risk management.

Description: From a state perspective, this session covered some of the e-prescribing efforts being made across the country and included examples of existing legislation, provider assistance programs, and challenges surrounding state-specific e-prescribing programs. Attendees gathered information on how to effectively communicate with state legislators to address challenges related to e-prescribing adoption.

Description: This session explored the latest research highlighting the consumer value of e-prescribing. It also examined the efficiency and economic benefits of e-prescribing for both patient and practitioner. Panelists addressed the obstacles and benefits that directly affect the consumer, drew attention to anticipated consumer questions, and presented recommended adjustments to office processes and procedures to ease the transition for both physician and patient. In addition, the session covered the privacy and security protections that are critical to health information technology.
